Belly of a Drunken Piano -:- Saturday, 24 March 2007
Ormond Hall presents the powerful off Broadway hit, Belly of a Drunken Piano, a tribute to the music of living legend, Tom Waits, on Saturday, 24 March 2007, which is part of the Stonnington Jazz Festival. In Belly of a Drunken Piano, Stewart D’Arrietta pays homage to American singer/songwriter, composer and actor, Tom Waits, with his distinctive voice and musical style, which is a unique blend of blues, jazz and Vaudeville, that also features experimentation that has been likened to industrial music.
Belly of a Drunken Piano was a success in New York and Sydney and now returns to Melbourne for one performance only. (Stewart D’Arrietta performed this successful tribute with his trio last year for a sell-out season at The Famous Spiegeltent in Melbourne.)
What the critics have said: § "electrifying" - Variety § "rock-solid emotion" - The New York Times § "the man has got Waits' vaudeville, vile and emotion down" - NY Metro § "a rollicking cabaret act" - The New Yorker § "a stage presence & conviction to make the metaphors hang like grapes from every line" - The Sydney Morning Herald § "gut wrenching passion...an absolute knockout" - The Australian § "crazed, beast of a show" - The Age

Live entertainment was provided by Eugene Hamilton with his band 'New Money'. A silent auction with celebrity and sporting memorabilia, door prizes and raffles and a singles auction (with bidding for a date with four of Melbourne's hottest singles) ensured a fun night for all, while supporting a very worthwhile cause. Australian Cheddar Cheese Forum -:- 24 March 2004The Australian Specialist Cheesemakers’ Association (ASCA) presented a cheese forum on Australian Cheddars at Ormond Hall, as part of the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival. The event was a chance for the public to discover a range of world class cheddar cheeses that are produced here in Australia . Tasmania ’s master Cheesemakers, Jane Bennett from Ashgrove Dairy, Ueli Berger from King Island Dairy and Victoria ’s Ferial Zekiman from Maffra Cheese, presented a lively and informative discussion on the topic “Australian Cheddars Come of Age”. Areas covered included cheddaring cheese; the unique characteristics of cloth wrapped, waxed, rindless, and club style cheddars; the maturation process; and the Australian cheese industry’s place in the world. The ambience of Ormond Hall was particularly well matched with the fine cheeses offered for tasting. It was an evening of indulgence and education, where cheese enthusiasts and novices alike matched different beverages — including Australian wines and ciders as well as Belgian beer — with each cheddar cheese. Kurt Elling & the Laurence Hobgood Trio -:- 12 & 14 March 2004Seven-time Grammy nominated artist, Kurt Elling, performed at Ormond Hall recently, direct from Chicago . The masterful jazz singer appeared with the Laurence Hobgood Trio as part of The Man in the Air 2004 Australian Tour. Elling, a composer and lyricist, has performed to critical acclaim in America , Canada , Japan , and throughout Europe . The innovative performer has earned a reputation as a brilliant contemporary writer of vocalese, the art of setting words to instrumental solos. The performances delighted the capacity audiences, who, as part of Ormond Hall’s intimate Dinner & Show crowds, experienced something quite unique. The halcyon days of jazz were called to mind, as patrons enjoyed fine food and superb music. Elling and the Trio were impressed by the hall, commenting that the opportunity to play such a venue was limited. The Age music reviewer, Jessica Nicholas, described the Sunday night performance: “As a lyricist and performer, Elling wears paradox well. In fact, he positively revels in it. Like an impatient child, he is constantly pushing at the edges of his artform — and of his voice. When he scats an improvised chorus, the expressions on his face reflect the delight he takes in exploring the quirks, capacities and limitations of his instrument (actually, there aren't many of the last in evidence).” Antiquarian Book Exhibition & Auction -:- 19-26 February 2004The library of antiquarian book collector Dr John Chapman was auctioned on 26 February by dealer Peter Arnold. Arnold described the collection as one of the nation’s most admired private collections of Australiana. The record $1.7 million auction sparked controversy when the National Museum of Australia bid in competition with the State Library of Victoria. The National Museum successfully bid for two letters written at the time of settlement in Victoria . The first letter, dated June 1835, was a memorandum from Batman and members of the Port Philip Association to the British secretary for the colonies, Lord Glenelg, in London . The memorandum was described by Arnold as being “one of the most important still in private hands”; in it, Batman and other signatories urged Glenelg to support their land claims, which were based on a peaceful treaty with Port Philip Aborigines. Glenelg rejected the claim. The letter sold for $97,100. The second letter, dated August 1835, was written by the Port Philip Association’s surveyor, John Helder Wedge. In the letter, Helder Wedge suggested that the proposed site of settlement be moved from Batman’s choice of a dry location near modern-day Geelong to a spot on a freshwater river he named the Yarra. The famous quote “This will be the spot for a village”, formerly attributed to Batman, was actually written by Helder Wedge. The letter sold for $85,000. Vince Jones -:- 25 January 2004Leading Australian vocalist and trumpeter, Vince Jones, returned to Ormond Hall on Sunday 25 January to perform as part of Belgian Beer Café Bluestone's annual Australia Day Music & Cycling Festival. Since releasing his first album Watch What Happens in 1981, Jones has enjoyed a popular and loyal following with Australian and international audiences. During the 1990s, Jones and his band played to packed houses in Germany , London , Switzerland , Denmark and the Netherlands . Upon his first performance at Ormond Hall in November 2003, Vince Jones claimed the venue as his new musical home: “The atmosphere of the hall is fantastic. Its sound and style are world class. With the increasing loss of grown-up clubs, it’s good to see the birth of a new one. Ormond Hall is definitely the best venue of its kind in Melbourne .” Vince Jones returned to Ormond Hall in May 2004 to perform two shows as part of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. Barbara Morrison -:- 24 January 2004On Saturday 24 January 2004 Ormond Hall was proud to play host to American singing legend, Barbara Morrison. Performing as part of Belgian Beer Café Bluestone’s annual Australia Day Music & Cycling Festival, Morrison delighted her audience with melodic renditions of traditional jazz, blues, gospel and pop songs. The 30 year veteran of the music industry has performed with a virtual who’s who of the jazz and blues world, including legends James Moody, Nancy Wilson and Tony Bennett. On the night, Morrison’s sassy sense of humour punctuated her play list, and her presence was described by one reviewer as having the “verve and excitement of an ingénue”.
